What are skin tags?
Skin tags are noncancerous growths on the skin. While you may have heard that these skin tags lead to cancer, that is extremely rare and generally untrue. These painless growths are common in men and women, especially after the age of 50. These growths are connected to the skin by a small, thin stalk known as a peduncle.
It is possible to get a skin tag anywhere along the body, but they generally appear in areas where the skin folds over itself. The most common areas include the groin, thighs, eyelids, neck, armpits, and under the breasts.
Why do I have skin tags? Can they be prevented?
It isn’t exactly clear why skin tags form, but given these growths most often appear in skin folds, friction could play a role in it. Some research suggests the HPV virus may play a role in skin tag development, but more studies need to be completed to confirm this connection.
In some cases, skin tags could be a sign of type 2 diabetes, and our doctor may want to test you for that when you visit our clinic. Skin tags are often found on people who also have high triglycerides, high body mass index, and insulin resistance.
Skin tags can also be a common side effect of pregnancy. Weight gain and hormone changes are suspected of playing a role in this. Rarely, skin tags could be a symptom of a hormone imbalance or endocrine problem.
Are skin tags contagious?
No, they are not contagious. However, they tend to run in families, so it isn’t uncommon for members of the same family to have them.
Do skin tags need to be removed?
Skin tags are generally harmless and do not hurt or cause discomfort. However, if they are snagging on clothing, jewelry, bleed from time to time or affect your self-esteem, removal is possible.
How are skin tags removed?
If the skin tag is small, it may just naturally rub off on its own. However, if they do need to be removed, we have several ways to treat them at our clinic.
LASER– For aesthetically pleasing results, our doctor can remove skin tags by our state-of-the-art laser.
Surgical – Our doctor will remove the skin tag with a scalpel or scissors.
Cryotherapy – Using liquid nitrogen, we will freeze the growth. This kills the cells of the skin tag, and it will naturally fall off.
Electrosurgery – The skin tag will be burnt off using electrical energy.
Small skin tags generally do not need anesthesia to remove. Local anesthesia may be required when removing large or a cluster of skin tags.
Can I remove skin tags at home?
There are many “natural remedies” that claim to remove skin tags. However, there is no current scientific evidence that proves that any of these methods are very effective. At home skin tag removal kits from websites may not be the best option either. These kits either use string or a chemical peel to remove the skin tag. At home, removal can lead to burns, bleeding, and infection.
Let our skilled providers help in our clean, sterile clinic.
