What is sleep apnea?

Sleep apnea is a very serious sleeping disorder. Sleep apnea occurs when a person’s breathing gets interrupted when they areasleep. Who is at risk for sleep apnea?

Sleep apnea can actually affect anyone at any age, even children. Some risk factors for sleep apnea can include:

  • Being a male
  • Overweight or obesity
  • Over the age of 40
  • Large neck, typically 17 in. or greater for men and 16 in. or greater for women
  • Large tonsils or a large tongue
  • Family history of sleep apnea
  • Allergies
  • Sinus problems
