What is a benign lesion?
The term “benign lesion” is a general term that is used to describe any change to your skin. Generally, lesions can be benign, malignant, or premalignant. Treating benign lesions now at Excel Primary Care prevents them from becoming a more serious medical problem down the road. Your skin lesions may appear as a different color, be raised under the skin, and sometimes seem like they are filled with fluid. They can either be large, small, or flat. Common benign lesions include moles, lipomas, skin tags, warts, calluses, or corns.
What are moles and lipomas?
Moles are skin lesions that can appear dark or be the same color as your skin. A mole on your skin can sometimes be raised and other times be flat. They should be examined because some moles can change into dangerous cancer, like melanoma. If your mole has started to bleed itch, change color, size, or shape, you should visit our clinic today for an evaluation and possible removal.
Lipomas appear as a semi-firm but soft “lump” that appears under the skin. Lumps under the skin could be the indication of other types of cancer, so an evaluation by one of our doctors is suggested to determine its cancerous potential. Lipomas are generally fatty tumors that are almost always benign. If you have had one for years and it has remained the same or unchanged, it is likely benign. However, if you do feel like it has grown a bit or you feel discomfort due to pressure in the area, it should be examined at our clinic. It is much easier to treat these masses when they are small.
How are moles and lipomas removed?
Moles are usually removed from the skin surgically. However, for aesthetically sensitive areas it can be removed without surgery using laser therapy. Our doctors will first biopsy the lesion to ensure it is benign.
Once the biopsy is confirmed as benign our expert doctor will discuss treatment options. Treatment options include removal, leave lesion alone, if you desire removal, we can use state of the art laser with no scars.
If the lesion is abnormal a complete excision of the mole may be required.
Lipomas, since they reside under the skin, must be removed surgically. Small lipomas are often removed by making a small cut and squeezing it out from under the skin. This procedure is done under local anesthesia and is usually an outpatient procedure and can be done within our office.
